DNA is really important, from back in the billions of years ago without much life when the most lively thing on earth were bacteria, they were made out of DNA. Those bacteria were just Prokaryotic cells, but we’ll get into that later. You can think of DNA like some code on a computer program, it’s what makes it, without it, you’ve got nothing. It makes up the organism, tells it how to make more of itself, and displays what it can and cannot do. DNA is made out of a sneeze called ATCG which stands for Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, and Guanine. ATCG in DNA are called nucleotides. Its structure is a double helix, it looks like a spiral staircase almost, or a spiral ladder. Adenine is connected through a bond made out of hydrogen atoms to Thymine, and only Thymine. The same goes for Cytosine and Guanine. These four substances can be arranged into almost anything, from a virus to the Chromosome of a Cell. DNA is you in a sense. It makes up everything you are, everything down to the smallest construct of you. Even down to the tiniest of red blood cells, there’s DNA there too. Fun fact, one of the only things able to reach down far enough to break those hydrogen bonds I talked about earlier is called RNA; Which is what we’re about to get down into right now! There are many types of RNA. Think of RNA like half of a DNA strand. Instead of DNA being Deoxyribonucleic Acid, RNA is just Ribonucleic Acid, no more of that Deoxy stuff, it sounds like a detergent. Anyway we’ll be going over just 3 types of RNA, mRNA, rRNA and tRNA. Just a quick fact before we get into RNA, RNA contains AUCG. RNA is Adenine, Uracil ,Cytosine, and Guanine, all the same holds true for the bonding. Cytosine still binds to Guanine and Guanine only, but Adenine only bonds to Uracil now! mRna is messenger RNA. No, not that messenger app on your phone, mRNA is what copies half of the DNA strand information and sends off the DNA sequence information down to the tRNA, which is the next step in this whole DNA reproduction! The tRNA is what transfers that information down to the next stage rRNA. rRNA is the ribosomal or receiver RNA. It receives the rRNA and just builds that other half of the DNA and just rinse and repeat after that. All of this is happening inside you right now constantly until you die. Alright! Let’s get into genes! Not those pants you’re wearing, we’re talking about genetic genes. And as such let’s talk about a person for a moment. His name was Gregor Mendel, He was born in 1822 and died in 1884. But let’s talk about what happened in between those points. Gregor mendel is referred to the father of genetics. A long time ago he had an experiment with pea plants. He took a pink pea plant, and a white pea plant, and cross breed them, meaning he took a seed from one and pollen from another and put them together. After all the seeds grew up, he got 100% pink pea plants and 0% white ones. â€Å"How could this be?† he thought. He performed the experiment again and he got 75% pink and 25% white ones. This is due to Dominant and Recessive Genes. A dominant gene, in this case was the pink leaf. The recessive gene was the white one. Let’s say the white petals were ww chromosomes and the pink ones were PP. Remember how I said DNA could display what is could or could not do? well the chromosomes are just that. Only ww could make up white, but PP and Pw could make up pink. Cross breeding would get you 16 different results. And to how reproduction works you only pass down one of those chromosomes. So all of them came out pink if you do the math, that’s the only possible combination being Pw. But cross breeding those two again gave him another 16 results, but this time, it wasn’t PP vs ww, it was Pw vs Pw. And as such, the results were 4 white and 12 pink, because you only have 1/4th chance of getting a ww. And the others were either Pw or PP. And that’s how recessive and dominant genes work. Now. Let’s talk about something called Cells, I know you’ve heard of them, reader. Cells are made up of a membrane bound nucleus, lots of ribosomes, mitochondria, the Golgi apparatus and the soft and hard endoplasmic reticulum and a little bit of cytoplasm for filling. Let’s start off with the center of a cell, the nucleus. The nucleus is the heart of the cell, however the nucleus is like a casing for the nucleolus, like the brain of the cell. The nucleolus is surrounded by chromosomes, which are in every cell, and those chromosomes look like a giant, but still tiny X. Farther out from the nucleus, we have the Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) right outside. The ER is useful in modifying and transporting proteins. Some of the time they stay put in the ER and sometimes they go out onto the Golgi apparatus! The Golgi apparatus is like the boxing part of the factory, it packages the proteins into lipids and vesicles. A lipid is what that makes up the cell membrane, like the outside shell. A vesicle is this bubble that actually leaves the cell and releases the proteins to other cells in the area. This is constantly happening inside your body as you are reading this. As you probably learned in biology some day that the mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell. Something else that is really cool is that mitochondria have their own DNA that is specific to them, not shared throughout the cell. However mitochondrial DNA is highly susceptible to mutations because it does not have robust DNA. Inside the mitochondria is adenosine triphosphate or you can just call it ATP for short. ATP is energy for cells, it can transfer energy, and is sometimes referred to as the currency of the cells. Another thing they do is that they generate heat and help with signaling activities, and mediate cell growth and death. The number of mitochondria in the cell varies, like say in the liver, there are sometimes hundreds of mitochondria for energy to break down foods.. Now, we are going to talk about Plant Cells. Actually, before we go and talk about Plant cells, let’s talk about the difference between them. Plant cells are very similar to Animal cells, but Plant cells have Cell Walls, and Chloroplasts. That’s pretty much it actually. Most of the rest is the same. You all know that plants perform photosynthesis, turning light energy into food, or ATP. But how do they do it? Well it starts was down in the cells with something called chloroplasts. This is something that animal cells do NOT have. Inside a chloroplast is many of these little green disks called thylakoids. These thylakoids contain chlorophyll, that’s where the magic happens. If you didn’t know, chlorophyll is green, and that is the major role in what makes most leaves and most plants green! Plant and animal cells are called Eukaryotes and I’m about to talk about something much older. Prokaryotes are 2 billion years older than Eukaryotes. Fun fact: Eukaryotes came from Prokaryotes. Prokaryotes are very simple, they only have a singular but long strand of DNA that just floats inside the cell. Prokaryotes are just bacteria, that’s the domain they belong to. The story on how Prokaryotes become Eukaryotes is that one day a Prokaryote swallows another bacterium, and the relationship works nicely. That other bacterium is called mitochondria. so when the cell reproduced through binary fission it split half of the mitochondria, and then the cycle repeated and other things were engulfed and then evolution came and then suddenly you have a Eukaryote after 2 billion years. Parallel Paths The poem ?Parallel Paths? by Kevin Clark is a metaphorical account of a marriage and the challenges it encounters. It is difficult to follow this story of love and how communication should bring a relationship closer. When considering the title of the poem ?Parallel Paths?, the lines never get closer; they stay separated. There are several metaphors to examine in the poem in order to understand the message. In the first few metaphors, the speaker sets the tone (lines 1-3). ?Today you?re lucky in love with your wife for the first time in weeks, both of you out for a walk in the overgrown garden?. This indicates the relationship has fallen onto hard times and there are difficulties in the marriage. It soon becomes clear that love is not the only thing needed for a long lasting relationship. It takes communication, reasoning and a bit of flexibility from both people in the relationship in order to get through the complexities of a marriage. Relationships and marriage bring something different for everyone, with their own set of issues and problems. Understanding the situation is critical and the one most important thing that brings people together is love so it is very important never to lose the remembrance of the feeling of being in love. The speaker speaks of a park that has not been taken care of which relates this to a marriage that has not been doing well (2-3), ?both of you out for a walk in the overgrown park?. If they do not constantly work to grow the relationship, it can potentially split apart. It is not always easy but if both parties in the relationship open the lines of communication, they will be able to make it through and make it work. When talking about relationships and marriage, if communication is absent then there is little hope that some issues can be resolved as neither person knows the other?s thoughts. The best way to remedy most issues is to spend time communicating and constructively sharing ones true feelings. As the speaker continues, he relays the woman in the relationship is stepping away from trying to work things out because there is no communication and both parties have given up on each other (19-22) ?Now the woman feigns confidence, stepping gracefully away, Two lives irrevocably?. This shows sometimes in a relationship people choose not to work issues out and give up on one another. In the last quarter of the poem the speaker then turns the poem around (31-40) ?Or right now: how all these thoughts have occurred to you in a flash. When you look up, your wife?s vanished, But really she?s there, of course, off the path, among the ancient waist-high grasses, holding out to you a single mutable wildflower burning in its own ochre light. From here to that flower exist no guarantees. Best to get on with it?. It showed that there was still time to save the marriage, when it seemed the relationship was all but over and would not be able to recover. The couple then decided to communicate and work on their relationship and their marriage. It can be said if there is a little bit of fire in the marriage left from both partners, then there is good chance they will be able rekindle their lost love for one another and try to work things out through communication. When the speaker uses the metaphor ?a single mutable wildflower? (37), he is inferring that it is unknown that this relationship will last, but they will at least give it all their effort in communication and remember the love they feel for one another. Being negative about fixing issues in a relationship, or being unwilling to work things out almost guarantees it will not be a lasting relationship. Approaching issues optimistically and showing genuine concern to fix them validates the commitment to the relationship. Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Processes All living things need a continuous supply of energy to keep their cells functioning normally and to stay healthy. Some organisms, called autotrophs, can produce their own energy using sunlight or other energy sources through processes such as ​photosynthesis. Others, like humans, need to eat food in order to produce energy. However, that is not the type of energy cells use to function. Instead, they use a molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to keep themselves going. The cells, therefore, must have a way to take the chemical energy stored in food and transform it into the ATP they need to function. The process cells undergo to make this change is called cellular respiration. Two Types of Cellular Processes Cellular respiration can be aerobic (meaning with oxygen) or anaerobic (without oxygen). Which route the cells take to create the ATP depends solely on whether or not there is enough oxygen present to undergo aerobic respiration. If there is not enough oxygen present for aerobic respiration, then some organisms will resort to using anaerobic respiration or other anaerobic processes such as fermentation. Aerobic Respiration In order to maximize the amount of ATP made in the process of cellular respiration, oxygen must be present. As eukaryotic species evolved over time, they became more complex with more organs and body parts. It became necessary for cells to be able to create as much ATP as possible to keep these new adaptations running properly. Early Earths atmosphere had very little oxygen. It wasnt until after autotrophs became abundant and released large amounts of oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis that aerobic respiration could evolve. The oxygen allowed each cell to produce many times more ATP than their ancient ancestors that relied on anaerobic respiration. This process happens in the cell organelle called the mitochondria. Anaerobic Processes More primitive are  the processes that many organisms undergo when not enough oxygen is present. The most commonly known anaerobic processes are known as fermentation.  Most anaerobic processes start  out the same way as aerobic respiration, but they stop  partway through the pathway because the oxygen is not available for it to finish the aerobic respiration process, or they join with another molecule that is not oxygen as the final electron acceptor. Fermentation makes many fewer ATP and also releases byproducts of either lactic acid or alcohol, in most cases. Anaerobic processes can happen in the mitochondria or in the cytoplasm of the cell. Lactic acid fermentation is the type of anaerobic process humans undergo if there is a shortage of oxygen. For example, long distance runners experience a buildup of lactic acid in their muscles because they are not taking in enough oxygen to keep up with the demand of energy needed for the exercise. The lactic acid can even cause cramping and soreness in the muscles as time goes on. Alcoholic fermentation does not happen in humans. Yeast is a good example of an organism that undergoes alcoholic fermentation. The same process that goes on in the mitochondria during lactic acid fermentation also happens in alcoholic fermentation. The only difference is that the byproduct of alcoholic fermentation is ethyl alcohol. Alcoholic fermentation is important for the beer industry. Beer makers add yeast which will undergo alcoholic fermentation to add alcohol to the brew. Wine fermentation is also similar and provides the alcohol for the wine. Which is Better? Aerobic respiration is much more efficient at making ATP than anaerobic processes like fermentation. Without oxygen, the Krebs Cycle and the Electron Transport Chain in cellular respiration get backed up and will not work any longer. This forces the cell to undergo the much less efficient fermentation. While aerobic respiration can produce up to 36 ATP, the different types of fermentation  can only have a net gain of 2 ATP. Evolution and Respiration It is thought that the most ancient type of respiration is anaerobic. Since there was little to no oxygen present when the first eukaryotic cells evolved through endosymbiosis, they could only undergo anaerobic respiration or something similar to fermentation. This was not a problem, however, since those first cells were unicellular. Producing only 2 ATP at a time was enough to keep the single cell running. As multicellular eukaryotic organisms began to appear on Earth, the larger and more complex organisms needed to produce more energy. Through natural selection, organisms with more mitochondria that could undergo aerobic respiration survived and reproduced, passing on these favorable adaptations to their offspring. The more ancient versions could no longer keep up with the demand for ATP in the more complex organism and went extinct.

Everyone possesses some level of intelligence at birth. Yet, as some grow older, they transform from great beings of high intellect to creatures that seem to have little to no aptitude. During the years that they grow up, most of these stupid people do not lose knowledge; they gain it. What is the reason for their degeneration into stupidity? Perhaps stupidity is not a lack of intelligence, as many believe. Maybe, it is the refusal to utilize one’s intelligence to the highest possible degree.Unwillingness to learn is unmistakably present in the life of a stupid person. Last week, I was discussing schoolwork with a friend of mine when he said that he recently failed a paper on the usage of commas. I was aghast that a sixteen-year-old student could fall short in the simple arena of comma usage, but this happens every day. My frien d and others like him have sat through countless classes that have taught them how to use commas. However, they cannot determine the correct site of a comma because they have deliberately decided that neither self-improvement nor the acquisition of knowledge is an important objective in their lives.For whatever reason, they have chosen to be ignorant, and thus, they are stupid. In addition, laziness consumes the life of a stupid person. Stupid people will not apply themselves in anything that is not pleasurable. Stupid teenagers sit in their rooms all weekend playing Black Ops because it takes less effort and brainpower to play  a  game  than it does to write an English paper. In the same manner, stupid adults engross their minds in college football all weekend rather than cleaning out their garage. To make matters worse, both stupid adults and  stupid  teenagers complain about their unfinished papers and filthy garages.Furthermore, stupid people do nothing to get themselv es out of their undesirable situations. Unless motivated  to change their surroundings, these stupid people continue to sit in their laziness and incessantly grumble about their unfavorable, yet repairable, conditions. Stupid people constantly refuse to use common sense in their words. When a thought enters the mind of a stupid person, it immediately converts into words. The stupid person does not censor what they say, so they will question obviously true statements and declare completely unintelligent babble.Since they are stupid, they do not contain their senseless questions and statements. If they would only think through their thoughts before transforming them into words, stupid people would appear to be much less stupid. In addition to not using common sense before speaking, stupid people do not use common sense before performing their actions either. Recently at volleyball practice, I was standing still when a fellow player of mine launched a ball at my head. I looked at my teammate and scowled. She obviously did not mean to send the ball at my face. In fact, she did not mean to kick it at anything in particular.However, she also did not consider that if she kicked this ball, it might travel in an undesired direction and injure someone. Stupid people do not consider the effects of their actions. Consequently, they travel through life recklessly while immediately turning their impulsive ideas into actions. Although stupid people can reform themselves into intelligent, productive members of society, these conversions are infrequent. It seems that there is no hope to entirely eradicate the existence of stupid people. However, if we remove all the warning labels, the problem may sort itself out.

Description Blue parrotfish are blue with a yellow spot on their heads as juveniles and are solid blue as adults. They are the only species of parrotfish that are solid blue as adults. Their size ranges from 11 to 29 inches, and they can weigh up to 20 pounds. As juveniles grow, their snout bulges outward. Blue parrotfish, as well as all parrotfish, have jaws with fused teeth, giving it a beak-like appearance. They have a second set of teeth in their throats called a pharyngeal apparatus that crushes the hard rock and coral they swallow. Habitat and Distribution The habitat of blue parrotfish includes coral reefs in tropical waters at depths of 10 to 80 feet. They are found across the western Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, as far north as Maryland, USA, and as far south as northern South America. However, they do not live in the Gulf of Mexico. They are native to Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and Haiti, among other locations. Diet and Behavior Up to 80% of a blue parrotfish’s time can be spent looking for food, which consists of dead, algae-coated coral. Eating algae off coral reefs preserves the coral by reducing the amount of algae that could suffocate it. They grind chunks of coral off with their teeth and then break up the coral to get to the algae with their second set of teeth. The undigested coral pieces get deposited as sand in these areas. This is not only important for the environment, as they are responsible for the sandy beach formation in the Caribbean, but it is also important for blue parrotfish as this grinding controls the length of their teeth. Blue parrotfish are daytime creatures and seek shelter during the night. They do so by secreting a mucous that masks their scent, tastes bitter, and makes them harder to find. The mucous has holes on each end to allow water to flow over the fish as it sleeps. Males can also intensify their colors to deter any threats. They move in large groups of 40 individuals, with a male leader and the rest females. The male is very aggressive, chasing intruders as far as 20 feet away from the group. If the male dies, one of the females will undergo a sex change and become an aggressive, brightly colored male. Reproduction and Offspring School of Blue Parrotfish. Females are oviparous, meaning they produce eggs that hatch in the water. During this time, they gather into large spawning groups and males and females form pairs. After they mate, the female releases the fertilized eggs into the water column. The eggs sink to the seabed and hatch after 25 hours. After hatching, these larva begin feeding 3 days later. They develop quickly and have to survive on their own from birth. Juveniles feed on turtle grass beds and eat small plants and organisms. Conservation Status Blue parrotfish are designated as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Bermuda has closed fishing of parrotfish for conservation, but they are still fished in other regions of the Caribbean. They are also impacted by human destruction of coral reefs by bleaching or death.
